Chinatown Neighborhood in Los Angeles, California

I’ve been visiting Chinatown off and on since 2003. It’s always been such a bright, serene place. Memories of the girls playing on the mini ‘merry go round’ and ‘race car’ are so precious. (Don’t think the rides exist anymore.) Throwing coins into the wishing pond is always the challenge to see if you can get your coin into the health, happiness or the ever popular prosperity cup. Browsing through the shops is always such a treat.

From my standpoint, Wonder Bakery is across the street, to my left and Golden Dragon Restaurant is directly behind me.

The best place to park is the below ground parking (lot’s of shade!) located  on either N. Hill St. or N. Broadway within Chinatown. Yes, there is a fee, but it’s well worth it.

Year of the Ram

This trip I picked out a very handsome plant and we traveled with our friend Fredo. My favorite restaurant is Golden Dragon, the dim sum is always very fresh. Just love the pork buns! A must stop; Wonder Bakery because of the wide variety of choices. I like to pick out something new each time I go and I’m never disappointed.  According to a very informative source, the twin dragons adorning the entryway into Chinatown, blow smoke through their nostrils on an intermittent basis. How cool is that?

Norton Simon Museum 411 W Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91105

It should go without saying that I just love museums. The silent portraits of history hanging on the wall, the sculptures and statues, waiting to be observed and admired. Hoping to inspire and illuminate each and every person strolling by.

For me, to truly appreciate each exhibition, I set aside at least half the day for my visit. This gives me time to read the information on the pieces that are of particular interest and or sit in front of a piece for awhile to take it all in. They have a small snack bar outside by the small pond, surrounded by shrubs and trees. Note; if you try to take in a water bottle, umbrella or any object they think might pose some sort of problem, it will be taken away from you, stored at the security desk then you are given a ticket to pick it up upon your departure.

The Norton Simon Museum, which comprises more than 11,000 objects, contains a significant permanent collection which is highly regarded internationally. The Norton Simon collections include: European paintings, sculptures, and tapestries; Asia sculptures, paintings, and woodblock prints; and sculpture gardens displaying many sculptors’ work in a landscape setting around a large pond. The museum contains the Norton Simon Theater which shows film programs daily, and hosts lectures, symposia, and dance and musical performances year-round. The museum is located along the route of the Tournament of Rose’s Parade, where its distinctive, brown tile-exterior can be seen in the background on TV.

Walking through each exhibit my eyes travel around the room, taking in the whole view. Then deciding which direction to start my campaign, it begins. Each painting, sculpture and statue invokes something different to the viewer. So much to see, so little time.

1898 Stephens, Terry House 1926. Dedicated 1977 Coronado Historical Association

One of my favorite places in Coronado can be found by biking through the quiet house lined streets. The houses that have stood the test of time, been renovated to their original glory and the special houses known as historical landmarks. The architecture stands out, quietly waiting to be noticed and appreciated.

The Stephens Terry house made my head turn as I was biking by, had to stop and take a look at this historical landmark that’s up for sale.

Front door.

“The mansion, a three-story Coronado landmark at 711 A Ave., was designed by noted architects William Hebbard and Irving Gill in 1898 for A.P. Stephens. It was purchased in 1915 as a retirement home by Marshall O. Terry, former surgeon general of New York.

Mr. Hansen bought the home at auction in 1950. He raised two families there – his four sons and two nephews and a niece, whom he took in after the death of their parents.”

Such a treat to find a 117 year old mansion style home! Now if I could only get the realtor to give me the grand tour of the inside.
