I wake up Tuesdays and I think about battered pieces of chicken dipping into fresh canola oil. I try to get to By The Beach by 11am when the chicken is fresh out of the fryer.
Batter was thin and crunchy. Fresh, hot chicken aroma was a prelude to the delicious flavor Caribbean spices in the batter imparted to the chicken. When it’s fresh out of the fryer this is one of my fav places to get fried chicken. When it’s been sitting around in the warming tray it’s very good.
Bbq ribs. $6 for 3 pork ribs. Nice char from the gas grill.
I liked flavors from the dry rub and the Sweet Baby Rays sauce added a sweet and slightly spicy flavor. This is as good as it gets without a smoker.
A different day I tried the oxtail. Very tender oxtail with delicious flavors. Also very fatty so this dish was extremely juicy but you don’t get a lot of meat.
Cuban pork was shredded and very tender like kalua pork only with cuban seasonings. Love the cuban flavors.
Tri tip was tender and had a delicious smoky flavor from the gas grill. The char’d bits had amazing flavor without being burnt.
By The Beach is my favorite spot to eat at UCSD.
Caribbean or Cuban? The flavor profiles of the dishes are delicious and it’s hard to decide which dish to choose. Sadly I can only eat here Tuesday as they are only here as part of the UCSD Farmers Market.

The food pictures are making me hungry! Especially the fried chicken!
It’s awesome fried chicken!
I appreciate how you time your lunch based on how hot/fresh the fried chicken will be. Impressive.
Where is there to park for non-UCSD people who want to try this market?
You should park at the Gilman Parking Structure: https://en.parkopedia.com/parking/garage/uc_san_diego_gilman_parking_structure_lots_p451_p453/92093/san_diego/?arriving=201805171130&leaving=201805171330
The flavor of the chicken varies depending on how fresh it is. Also you get the maximum crispness of the skin right out of the fryer. 🙂
