Del Mar Fair – Day 1

This year I visited the fair twice to see as much as I could and still have a relaxing visit.  Also I wanted to try more food than I could eat in one day.  You can read about Day 2 here.
I started with lunch at Reno’s Fish & Chips where I ordered fried catfish and zucchini.

Zucchini was battered in crunchy tempura batter and had bold zucchini flavor.  I look forward to it every year.  Catfish was coated in a cornmeal batter.  One small piece was overcooked and hard and crunchy on the edges.  The bigger piece was properly cooked and was ok.  The batter to fish ratio was too high so I was tasting mostly batter rather than catfish.  I’ve always gotten fried cod in the past and the pieces were bigger so there was a better fish to batter ratio.
Next I checked out the outdoor decor area.
There were lots of creative exhibits on how to arrange your garden.
The San Diego Garden Railway Society had a real nice set of trains running.
Then it was off to the pig races.  It was impressive how fast the cute little pigs would run to get an Oreo treat at the finish line!  Nearby were a bunch of farm animals like cows, pigs, sheep, rabbits, and chickens.
After all that walking it was time to stop by Chicken Charlie’s.  It’s impressive how every year Charlie finds something new to create involving the fryer.
This year I tried bacon wrapped fried chicken which was 5 drumsticks and fries.  It was enough to feed 2 people.  I loved the batter which was crunchy and had delicious spices.  Adding bacon gave it even more delicious flavor.  I would get this again!
For dessert I bought a 3 pack of Lime and lavender cookies from Sweet Cheeks Baking Co.
Cookies were crunchy on the outside and had a delicious combination of lime and lavender flavor.  I love lime sugar cookies and the additional of lavender made it even better.  $12 for 3 cookies.
Next to last stop for the day was the building with the photography exhibit.  I love seeing what other people take photos of and there were some awesome photos.  I didn’t take any photos there as there were a ton of signs forbidding taking photos of the photos.
Last stop was the plant vendor Green Acres Nursery Inc.
There were lots of lovely plants and Maggie picked the one with the pink flowers to take home.

  1. Wow you sure ate a lot of food! Those pigs were super cute with adorable names. Think I made friends with some sweet goats and a few furry rabbits.

    1. The food was really good! 🙂 We will have to watch the pig races again next year.

  2. Baby piglets running to get an oreo!!!! Too funny and too cute!!! The food options always look amazing but always seem to taste meh. The fried zucchini would be my go to – do they fry them to order? Where do park when you visit?

    1. You gotta see the baby piglets race! The fried zucchini can be made to order if you request it. It is always hot and fresh when I order it as they have good turnover. They made the catfish to order. If I go on a weekday I park the Horse park. On weekends I park at Torrey Pines high school. Check the info on the parking website. https://sdfair.com/plan-your-visit/parking/

  3. Great two part post! This year has been so different for me and I just today put up my small Fair post. You are linked and I appreciate seeing what you saw and did!

    1. Thanks! 🙂 I linked you back.
