Mid-Autumn Festival 2018

My mom started me on celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival.  I remember the first time we went and bought Eastern Bakery moon cakes at Woo Chee Chong.  I loved the pastry part and the lotus seed filling.  Woo Chee Chong isn’t around any more and neither is my mom.

I still buy Eastern Bakery moon cakes whenever I visit San Francisco.

This year a Yelp friend told me about the cheap moon cakes at Costco.
I noticed they were Joy Luck Palace Moon Cakes made in Taiwan.
So far I’ve only liked moon cakes made in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Hong Kong.  I gave them a try though.
The pastry part didn’t have any crunch to it and didn’t seem fresh.  Lotus seed part was ok.
I don’t like egg yolks but the dog liked them so it wasn’t a total loss.
I won’t be getting these again.
Wing Wah moon cakes are my favorite.
I get the white lotus seed ones at Ranch 99 for $37.
I love the combination of flavors from the thin pastry shell and the sweet but not to sweet lotus seed middle.
That lotus seed filling is really pure and refined like extra virgin olive oil has all impurities removed.
This year I noticed 85C has moon cakes.
They are mini size compared to normal sized Wing Wah moon cake.

The red bean yolk moon cake had the same flavor as the filling in the red bean buns.  I liked the red bean flavor but the pastry part didn’t taste very fresh.
Pineapple filling moon cake was too sweet for me.  I like fresh pineapple but this dessert tasted strange.  The closest thing I’ve tasted is dried pineapple rings at Sprouts but this filling is much sweeter.
Taro Mochi Pastry taste much like melon cakes from Eastern Bakery.  Pastry part is like a melon cake with a sweet but not too sweet mochi center.  I loved the mix of flavors from the pastry, taro filling, and mochi center.
On September 24 2018 I’ll step outside in the evening and watch the full moon with my Wing Wah moon cake in hand and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.  Thanks mom for the delicious moon cakes over the years.

  1. Lovely pictures of all the moon cakes! My favorite moon cake is the lotus seed one without yolk from Ranch 99. Don’t like the dried out yolks. Nice of you to share your cool memories of your Mom. I’m sure she’s smiling down on you from heaven. :>)

  2. Thanks! I’ve never had a better tasting moon cake than the Wing Wah one. 🙂

  3. This post almost made me teary. I’m sorry about the loss of your mom. I’m not a fan of moon cakes as I don’t like the yolk either. Sis and I saw the mooncakes at Costco! Would it help if you heat up the cakes in the toaster?

Your dog might enjoy the yolks too.
