The woods are lovely dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost
So many shades of green here. Close my eyes and breathe deep the clean forest scent. I like to sit along the hiking trails away from the passes and listen to the sound of running water and the wind blowing through the leaves. The oldest trees are over a thousand years old. The park was declared a National Monument in 1908. Before logging came to California there were 2 million acres of old-growth coastal redwoods. I brush my hand over a redwood. Feel the ancient bark beneath my fingers. I like the softness.
This is my favorite National Park. I love seeing majestic redwoods reaching towards the sky. You can choose from easy trails to challenging trails that go over the hills and to the sea. There is no better place in California to breathe in the mix of sea and redwood forest air. Wish I could stay but the last shuttle bus leaves at 5:30pm.
As I wait for the Muir Woods shuttle a deer wanders bye for a snack and a goodbye. I’ve never seen a deer so close and this is the first time I’ve seen a deer at Muir Woods. I purchased a National Park pass for $80 so I can return again next year with up to 4 people. 🙂
