Smokeyard Bbq – UTC

Kitchen
Scent of hickory and applewood smoke is faint.  Smoker is hidden in the back.

I try the 4 bone beef rib meal.  Comes with a side of french fries.  Fries are crispy and have a good potato flavor.  Beef ribs are huge and incredibly tender.  Good beefy flavor from the meat enhanced by the Smokehouse sauce which adds a bit of sweetness and a hint of spiciness.  I’m very impressed by the quality of the meat.  I use to buy beef ribs to bbq at Food 4 Less but those ribs don’t have much meat on the bone and the meat is not tender.
2nd visit.  I came by for happy hour.
Sticky ribs were $9.  You get 2 pork ribs that were appetizer size.  Perfect size for a snack but I’d need 2 orders for dinner.  Pork fresh, tender and moist.  Smoky flavor was subtle with the sweet sauce being the dominant flavor.  Waiter said the sauce was spicy but I thought it was mostly sweet.  I like this dish a lot.  It would be even more tempting if it had more smoke flavor.
3rd visit.  Back for more happy hour deals.
$9 smoked wings had delicious smoke flavor and aroma.  Tasted awesome with a little bit of bbq sauce.  Chicken retained it’s juices and the skin was crunchy.  I also tried the tri tip skewers.  Coated in sticky sweet bbq sauce I liked the flavor but I would prefer bigger pieces of beef cooked a bit less as the beef was cooked close to well done.
4th visit happy hour.

Bbq chips were crunchy with a nice bbq flavor.  You don’t get many for $2.
Bacon skewer was a little sweet with lots of savory flavor.  Loved the flavor but you only get 3 skewers so this is a very light snack.
This time I ordered the smoked wings covered in bbq sauce.  Wings were tender and juicy with delicious sweet and smoky flavor.
Outdoor seating
Situated near Macy’s next to the new parking structure Smokeyard BBQ is part of the fancy new UTC expansion.  While I like the new parking structure and restaurants I miss the trees that separated the parking lot from the street.
Modern dining room.

Smokeyard BBQ is my fav bbq in the area but it’s pricey at $30 for 4 beef ribs.  I can get 4 similar sized ribs at Corbin’s Q for $20.  Things have changed since I biked here for the first time from Mira Mesa.  In my high school days this was the furthest I’d biked on my old 10 speed.  Back then there was just the food court and the best spot to eat was the mongolian bbq place.  All the good bbq spots I knew of back then were south of the 8 freeway.  Faye of Faye’s Fork visited when this place first opened.
