I was intrigued when I saw the sign advertising Missouri style bbq. Outside this place had the look of a classic eatery.
Inside it looked like a historic house with a cute bear motiff.
Turns out Ben Baier started this bbq in the 1940’s.
I ordered the ribs and ribs with beef ribs and pork ribs. Beef rib was juicy with smoky flavor and some flavor and the dry rub. With a bit more dry rub I would have eaten them plain. I needed a bit more flavor so I added a little of the sweet sauce. There was also the original mustard based sauce and a spicy sauce available. Pork ribs were a bit hit and miss. The end pieces had a bit of carbonization.
The Bear Pit is the oldest bbq I’ve visited. It’s a nice change from the modern expensive places in my neighborhood. Service was good. I’d return if I was in the area and craving bbq.

The interior decor is super cute with the bears I agree. Nice place to have a late lunch or early dinner.
We will have to visit again next time we are in the area.
So it looks more like St Louis style (acidic – thinner – not too sweet) versus Kansas City style BBQ?
Yes the ribs were a bit acidic. They tasted better with some sweet sauce.
