New Hwong Kok

New Hwong Kok is hidden away in a residential neighborhood.

A few people came in for to go orders while we ate.
I started with the cha siu bao.
Pastry had a nice mild flavor while the bbq pork had a mix of sweet and savory 5 spice powder flavor.  Best I’ve had outside of a dim sum restaurant.
Next I tried a zongzi which is a traditional Cantonese dish with sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.
It was delicious just like my mom made when I was little.
Sticky rice contained peanuts, big pieces of pork, and Chinese sausage.  They were so good I bought 3 more to go.
For dessert I had sweet rice cakes.  Edges were a bit hard and the texture in general was pretty dense.  Not much flavor.  I didn’t like them.
Lastly I had a melon cake.  Nice flaky pastry with melon in the center.  I liked slightly sweet flavor.
Mari picked up some sticky rice for me to try.
It came wrapped in bamboo leaves in a rectangular shape.  Rice absorbed flavors from both the leaves and the pork and sausage.  Very good tasting treat just like you will find at dim sum restaurants.  I prefer the zongzi with the peanuts though.
Cha siu bao ready to reheat.

I suspect this place has more hidden gems to discover.  I’ll be returning for more cha siu bao and zongzi.  🙂
