Jack In the Box – Miramar Road

I remember the first time I visited Jack in the Box.  There was a cute Jack in the Box as the sign and the corporate logo.  Nice cashier gave me a balloon and I ordered my first hot apple turnover.  Crust was crunchy and there was a sweet apple filling.  One of the best desserts I’ve ever had.

The new location on Miramar Road just opened.

There was a Burger King at this spot for years.  I thought I’d give this new Jack in the box a try after they mailed me a flyer advertising a $4.99 bbq bacon double cheeseburger combo with a picture of a big burger with bacon overflowing the bun.
Turns out they have small, medium, and large options.  The small is $4.99 and that’s the one I ordered.
It’s a kid size burger.  Bun was light on flavor and similar to a generic supermarket bun.  Beef was low quality with minimal beef flavor and not well seasoned.  I had a tiny bone fragment and a tiny bit of cartilage in my patty.  Meat supplier didn’t grind the beef good enough.  Bacon had a salty flavor and lacked crunchy goodness.
Onion ring flavor mostly came from the panko batter.  I generally don’t like panko batter so I’d like this burger a bit more without the onion ring.
Curly fries were crunchy and had a nice seasoned potato flavor.
I did like the high tech soda machine which had many varieties of Barq’s.  My favorite is still the classic Barq’s Root Beer which was sweet and had a nice root beer bite.
2nd visit I tried the chicken nuggets which had a nice crunch and flavor.  Very smooth texture from the ground chicken mixture.  I’m not a big fan as I don’t know what’s in there.  Egg rolls were crunchy on the outside and had some crisp veggies on the inside.  I didn’t like the flavor of the chicken.
Vanilla shake was my favorite part of this meal.  Cold, thick, with a noticeable vanilla flavor.  A bit too sweet though as I needed water afterwards.
This place is new, shiny, and very clean.
It’s very well lit and I love the Edison lights.  Employees were nice and efficient filling my order quickly.  One guy complimented me on my camera and we conversed a bit about his Canon 6D as well.
Computers determine when the food is ready.
In the old days I couldn’t wait till my next Jack In the Box visit to get some free balloons and a hot apple turnover.  At the $4.99 price point I’ve also tried Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Carl’s Jr.. None of them stand out to me.  Nowadays I’d rather pay a bit more for a more flavorful burger at Farmer Boy’s or alot more for a great burger at Balboa Bar + Grill.

  1. I think Jack in the Box is in need of better food suppliers. That will increase the quality of their food. I did like the egg rolls!

    1. I’d go a lot if they would bring back their apple turnovers.
