Driving past the iconic lemon I see the streets are mostly empty.
Smoke rises and fills Da Chicken Coop’s parking lot with the sweet scent of mesquite.
Coop is smoking some spicy sausage. He offers us a sample.
Sausage has a nice snap to it and full of savory flavor with a spicy kick. Delicious.
I order a large whiting and red snapper combo. Both are coated in a corn meal batter which gives a nice crunch. Red snapper was delicate and had that unique red snapper flavor. Whiting was a bit thinner and a bit denser with a strong whiting flavor. I really love fried whiting and this is the best I’ve found in San Diego.
French fries were hidden under the fish separated by a piece of wax paper. Fries were crispy with delicious potato flavor.
Guy inside was nice and got our order out quick. In previous visits I’ve had the fried catfish which I loved as much as the whiting. Nice crunchy corn meal batter while the catfish was delicate and full of catfish flavor.
Da Chicken Coop is only open for takeout/delivery 10-3pm. In these dark times when most places are closed I still have hope. Hope that Da Chicken Coop and other local joints can stay open and break up the monotony of home cooked meals with something amazing to eat.

It was really nice to see them still open! The spicy sausage was delicious!
Yes I hope they survive the drop in business.
