Mother’s Day Tribute. Amaryllis / Hippeastrum

Amaryllis means pride. Which is fitting since they are so stunningly beautiful. Each day my plant rewards me with new blooms.

I thought it would be lovely to share my specimen and dedicate it to all the wonderful Mother’s on this Mother’s day Sunday, May 10th, 2020. Love you Mom!

I’ve chronicled each day of blooms so you can follow along in the process. This year my Amaryllis chose to sprout six buds. Each bud contains four to five individual flowers.

It started with just one bud blooming. Followed by two more. After awhile then three more. Also I have another smaller pot with one Amaryllis bud, it’s just starting out. So far about 25 flowers.

Some fun facts about Amaryllis:

The bulbs I have are South American and are commonly sold as Amaryllis. Also known as Hippeastrum a genus in the family Amaryllidaceae. It includes 90 species and over 600 hybrids of perennial herbaceous bulbous plants. So you can imagine my disappointment in not knowing which species or hybrid mine is! The name Hippeastrum means “ Knight Star” given to it by William Herbert. I think I prefer this name.

I’ve had this Amaryllis for a few years now and it usually blooms once per year in the spring time. In between the green leaves are very lovely to admire. I hope you enjoyed viewing my flowers as much as I have!

Happy Mother’s Day to you and yours.
