The story of Tim Ho Wan begins in 2009 when Chef Mak Kwai-Pui and Chef Leung Fai Keung opened their first restaurant in Mongkok, Hong Kong. Tim Ho Wan earned it’s first Michelin star in 2010. In 2015 3 more branches each earned a Michelin star. Tim Ho Wan was then known as “the world’s cheapest Michelin-star restaurant.”
My friend Micheal at work suggested I visit as Tim Ho Wan had just opened a branch at the Palms Hotel I was staying at. You enter through the Palms Casino. Staff was very friendly.
There is an open kitchen separated by glass where you can watch as the dim sum chefs prepare dim sum.
Lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice was very sticky and I enjoyed the savory flavor from the pork.
Delicious.
Har gow had a mild flavored rice wrapper with delicious shrimp filling.
Siu mei had a delicious mix of shrimp and pork.
Baked char siu boa had a sweet bun with sweet, tender, and juicy bbq pork.
The sweet bun with sugar crusted on top is my favorite type. Sweet flavor reminds me of concha’s.
Tim Ho Wan has better tasting dim sum than I can get in San Diego. The delicious flavors are much more lively and vivid. I can taste why they were awarded a Michelin star. Lots of free parking in the nearby parking structure. Gets pretty busy for dinner but there were still a few empty tables on the Friday night I visited.

Just love the char siu boa! Lovely flavors with sweet bun. Wish they were closer!
We should go on another Vegas trip and get more!
I believe there’s a Tim Ho Wan in Irvine, but I have not been there. I don’t see it on the menu picture, but I’ve had their sesame ball with a lava like salted egg yolk filling at other locations.
Thanks for the tip Sandy! I found it:
Diamond Jamboree Shopping Center
2700 Alton Pkwy., Suite 127-131, Irvine, CA 92606
That’s a much shorter drive. 🙂 It looks like the Irvine location has a bigger menu too.

Did you recently go? How was the social distancing? We went to Vegas too and I wish I could have tried this place! Wow – a Michelin star dim sum. Now I want. The sticky rice is usually the most expensive item I get – but i don’t see the price on the menu here?
I went to Las Vegas on a business trip in October 2019. It took forever to post about it as a few weeks earlier I went on a long road trip to San Francisco I was posting about then there was the apocalypse times where I just posted about local spots that stayed open. Now I’m working on getting caught up with lots of Las Vegas posts.
I don’t recall the exact prices but they seemed similar to the high end San Diego dim sum spots. Work had me on a budget under $70 a day so dinner was under $35.
Next time you go to Vegas make sure you try Tim Ho Han!
