Sam Woo

I stopped by Sam Woo to buy a duck and was surprised to see zongzi.  I have not found any place in San Diego that has good zongzi so I did not have high hopes.

I showed up at 11am and the zongzi was slightly warm.
Sam Woo’s zongzi was made with sticky rice, peanuts, and Chinese sausage.
Near the center the normally soft sticky rice was hard.
This typically happens when you let it sit around all day or if you don’t defrost it properly.  This zongzi would be greatly improved if they were boiled for 5-10 minutes before eating.  Flavor of the rice, peanuts, and Chinese sausage was pretty good except for the hard parts.
Price was high at $5.50 each.
I need to go on another road trip to San Francisco.  I found zongzi just like my mom made last time.  New Hwong Kok had awesome tasting zongzi for $3.  I brought home a bunch in my cooler.  So much great tasting food I could bring home in my 70qt Yeti cooler…

  1. Too bad New Hwong Kok does not ship their food with same day delivery. Or you’d probably have to buy an extra freezer!

    1. You were suppose to buy a freezer for the garage!

  2. Oh I wanna see picture of your most recent duck purchase here too. I didn’t know they had zongzi here. It didn’t look very good at atll 🙁 My family usually steams them – how do you boil and not have it get watery?

    1. The leaf keeps it from getting watery. 5-10 minutes of boiling gets it hot and sticky. Where does your family get zongzi?

  3. Hey Soo – You might want to get your Sam Woo fix while you can. Don’t know if you saw this:

    1. Oh no… I loved their breakfast specials and the staff was nice to me. Thanks for the heads up Kirk!
