I remember Hillcrest In the early days. I ate at the Chicken Pie Shop and watched movies at The Guild Theatre on 5th Av. Much has changed. The Guild Theatre closed in 1997. The Chicken Pie Shop has moved to El Cajon Blvd. Coppertop Donuts opened in 2017. I visited them on Labor Day.
Streets were enveloped in fog. It’s a rare sight in summer and I took some photos.
Place looks like it was a Wienersnitzel.
As I ordered I watched a donut guy putting toppings on some donuts. They are baked fresh every 30 minutes.
Bear claw tasted fresh out of the fryer. Nice crispy outer layer with a bit of sweet honey glaze and almond bits. Very unique take on a bear claw.
Cinnamon sugar donut also tasted fresh out of the fryer. Cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top gave this donut a sweet flavor.
Coppertop donuts makes some of the freshest donuts in town. They start out with a basic donut base and you get to pick the toppings you want. Very cool as you can get a basic donut or one covered in sugary toppings. Service was speedy and friendly.

Nice fog pictures! That’s great you found a yummy donut place!
Thanks! You will have to try them.
I laughed so hard at “Place looks like it was a Wienersnitzel” ! The roof totally does huh!
I’ve heard about this place – is it better than Sidecar in your opinion? Is the dough dense like a cake donut or more pillowy like a yeast donut?
Faye,
I’m pretty sure it was a Winersnitzel in the old days. The donuts are a bit closer to cake donuts than yeast donuts. I prefer Sidecar as I prefer the yeast type donuts. You should give them a try and taste for yourself.
