I’ve been a loyal patron of The Balboa for years. Sadly they closed this year and I was worried I would have to go without my favorite burger in San Diego. Luckily there is The Balboa South in Chula Vista. I haven’t visited the old downtown area before. Looks like they are doing construction to revitalize the area.
The Balboa South is huge.
Maybe 4 times as big as the original if you include the back patio dining area that looked newly constructed due to the apocalypse.
Friendly staffer taking orders recognized me from The Balboa. We talked a bit about The Balboa and he mentioned they were in negotiations with the property owner so there is a possibility it could reopen.
I ordered my usual the Centennial Burger. Double beef patties and double bacon made for a huge meal. Beef had a nice char and the dripping juices could not be contained by the foil wrapper. Burger was bursting with beef flavor nicely accented by the savory bacon. Bolillo bun held everything together nicely and I liked the mild flavor it added. I’m happy I can still get my favorite burger in town. The drive is much farther but on the way home I stopped by Niederfrank’s to pick up some half gallons of ice cream so there is one advantage to this location.

They have a really nice back patio area! That’s good you can still get your favorite burger!
I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get another Balboa burger.
Oh man – that would be my perfect meal – juicy burger while watching NFL football. Did they have a/c inside? The double burger looks good – are you able to request the doneness of the meat?
They do have AC inside. It’s pretty cool outside. I didn’t ask to modify the doneness so I don’t know if they will modify it. The way they cook it normally is very juicy.
