I love visiting Pacific Beach in the morning before it’s packed with tourists.
I follow the siren call of buttery treats to Hommage Bakehouse.
Inside fresh baked aroma filled the air.
I made my choices as the locals started to line up.
Croissant had an outer layer that had a little crunch to it and light inner layers. Nice buttery flavor with a hint of salty flavor.
Almond croissant was denser than the regular croissant. Outside had a few crunchy parts while the inside was filled with smooth almond paste. Mix of buttery and sweet almond paste flavor.
Kouign-amann was denser than the croissant and had less buttery flavor and instead a sweet glaze gave this treat a sweet flavor.
Apple butter was a Kouign-amann with apple paste in the center. Loved the crunchy outer layer with the mix of sweet and buttery flavor. I didn’t care for the apple flavored paste and took it off.
Service was friendly and efficient. Great neighborhood bakery. My fav spot to get croissants is still Canele Bakery.

The kougin amann looks yummy. Great pictures! Now I’m hungry!
Thanks! You should eat a treat!
The croissant looks legit – too many places in town overproof them and they end up deflated and lacking the crispy/fluffy texture they’re supposed to have. I will have to try the kouign-amann here. I am still searching for a decent rendition in town.
Where is you favorite spot to get kouign-amann? Mine is https://www.hungryones.com/2019/12/patisserie-melanie/
I still haven’t found a decent kouign-amann in San Diego. I’ve always heard good things about Patisserie Melanie but still haven’t made it there. It’s been closed for a year + while she sets up her new shop, and then before that there were these weird hours where they’d be open 3 hours a day 2 days a week. I could never seem to get there lol.
