Día de los Muertos is November 2 2022 when the spirits of adults can rejoin their families for 24 hours. Midnight on October 31 the gates of heaven open and the spirits of children can rejoin their families for 24 hours. Each year I search for Pan de Muerto to celebrate Día de los Muertos.
I’m on the mailing list for El Super and they were advertising Pan de Muerto as available and baked daily.
Near the back of the store I found the Day of the Dead display. Price was $2.99.
Bread had a fresh aroma and was fluffy inside. Tasted a little buttery and the sugar on top gave it a sweet flavor. I didn’t taste any anise flavor which most of the Pan de Muerto I’ve tried had. El Super has baked some very good tasting bread.
While I was at El Super I also tried out some of their hot food.
Ribs were $8.99 per pound. Very tender. Taste like slow cooker ribs with seasoning basted on after cooking. Reminds me of ribs I’ve eaten at a buffet. Not bad. Not life changing.
Fried chicken/drumstick was $1.29 each and had a crunchy batter and juicy chicken. I liked the seasoning which tasted like salt and pepper. The fried chicken is my favorite hot food item so far.

Like the pink color on the bread, pretty. Would you purchase more?
Yes. It’s good tasting bread.
Seems like a good value. At the bakeries in town (like Panchita’s) the pan de muerto is $5+. I’ll also have to check out their hot foods. There is an El Super in the National City area that I visit sometimes.
I love Panchitas pan de muerto! I’ll try to visit before Nov 2. I would get more fried chicken if I was near an El Super. It was tasty and much cheaper than KFC.
