Zion National Park

Surrounded by office buildings sometimes I don’t feel a connection to the land and need a reminder.  Maggie planned out a trip to Zion National Park and Monument Valley as a reminder.

The purpose of Zion National Park is to preserve the dramatic geology including Zion Canyon and a labyrinth of deep and brilliantly colored Navajo sandstone canyons formed by extraordinary processes of erosion at the margin of the Colorado Plateau; to safeguard the park’s wilderness character and its wild and scenic river values; to protect evidence of human history; and to provide for scientific research and the enjoyment and enlightenment of the public.

Our trip to Zion at the end of March was fortuitous as it had just snowed and much of the park was snow covered.  I loved the contrast in color between the sandstone and the glistening snow.

Walking along the trails we found a stream and a waterfall.
I played with the snow.  It was cold with hard edges and some softness.  Felt like I was a kid forming a snowball and letting it fly.
One of the cool things about visiting Zion is there is free spring water at various locations in the park.  I brought a gallon container to get a sample.  I found the water cool and refreshing without any chemical flavors like chlorine in our local tap water.  Very tasty.  Next time I’ll bring more gallon containers.
Zion was amazing.  Loved breathing in the fresh air and walking dirt trails.  Good amount of wildlife to see.  I saw a deer as we were leaving.  I felt a connection to the land as the cold air and snow gave me one last taste of winter.
