Hong Kong Bbq

This spot was an empty field when we moved to the neighborhood.  Later there was a movie theatre.

Now it’s a supermarket and a restaurant.  My mom loved coming here.
Lots of Cantonese dishes and dim sum she could choose from.

They redecorated with new booths, chairs, and plastic fish after Golden Chopsticks opened.  Cathy of mmm-yoso!!! has visited recently too.

Fried chicken wings had crispy skin and the meat was moist.  Flavor was good.  Kind of like at Shanghai Cafe.
Peking pork chops have a very sweet flavor.  I prefer the version at Golden Chopsticks though as the pork chops have a crunchy batter and I like the flavor of the sauce better.
Roast duck had crispy skin with tender juicy meat and a tasty 5 spice powder based flavor.  Similar to roast duck from Sam Woo but more expensive.
Sweet rice cake had cake like texture and mild sweet flavor.  One of the best I’ve had in town.
Bbq pork pan fried noodles had delicious thin egg noodles.  Brown sauce adds a delicious flavor to everything.  Noodles come out crunchy but adding the brown sauce makes them like chow mein noodles.  Char sui is tender and full of tasty 5 spice powder flavor.  Bok choy is fresh and crisp.

Bbq pork buns had a mild flavored pastry outside with tender and flavorful bbq pork inside.
I still eat at Hong Kong Bbq and so does the remaining family.  I miss coming here with my mom though.

  1. I’m sure your Mother is smiling down on you from Heaven. The new tables and booths look nice. Great picture of the family.

    1. Thanks! We will have to go and get you some sticky rice sometime!

  2. Yum! I’ve noticed all the centrally located asian markets (99 Ranch, Zion, etc.) all have great food courts and/or restaurants within. We have one 99 Ranch in the south bay and it has a few hot food stations, but nothing like what’s available in the other locations, sadly.

  3. How are the hot food stations at your 99 Ranch?

    1. Eh it can depend, it’s all stuff under heat lamps so if it’s been sitting there a while it’s dry and tepid but if you luck out when it’s fresh it’s pretty good. I’ve gotten the har gow and the pork shumai and a few of the noodle dishes. I wish we could have boba tea stations or a Sam Woo or an entire food court (like Zion) but I think the location is just too small. On the flip side we have some Mexican supermarkets like Carnival (the one on 3rd Ave) that have all sorts of fresh food options, which is nice.

      1. Cool. I like the fried chicken at El Super if you go there after they put out a fresh batch like around 10:30am.
