I remember my first time eating at Phil’s Bbq in Mission Hills.
Phil was working the grill with 2 other guys. I loved the ribs and onion rings but not the tangy sauce. Now Phil has locations all over town. For our monthly lunch my co-workers picked Phil’s Bbq in Rancho Bernardo.
Place is huge with a dining room and a 2nd dining room around the bar.
Menu is much larger than the old days. I tried ribs and wings.
Beef rib was tender and meaty. Loved the smoky beef flavor and the caramelized sauce which add a touch of sweetness. Got the sauce on the side and like the old days I didn’t like the tangy flavor.
Smoked chicken wings were tender and not dry. I liked the smoky flavor.
I’ve been visiting Phil’s since he opened his Mission Hills location. I have always loved the mesquite grilled meats but not the too tangy sauce. Staff was very nice and kept the area clean and checked to see if we needed anything.

Looks like a fun lunch with co-workers. That’s great you enjoyed your food.
The bbq was good. 🙂
Phil’s on Goldfinch was a blast for many reasons, not the least of which was having a bbq place right in the middle of a residential neighborhood. A few USD professors that I knew lived near there and everything in their houses, including their clothes, reeked of smoke. Eventually they grew out of the location and expanded to Sports Arena, followed by similarly huge restaurants in other parts of North County (near where Phil lives). I always think of the original place when I’m in Mission Hills and I even sniff a little to see if I can still smell the smoke lol.
Thanks for the cool story! My place reeks of smoke too whenever I bbq. I wouldn’t want my place to always smell of smoke though. Your USD professor friends have cute houses. I like that part of town.
