Chef Char Seafood N Soul

I read about a new soul food spot located inside Parkway Plaza’s food court.

Chef Char had won a contest to occupy a spot rent free for 3 months.

I visited during the soft opening and not all their menu items were available.

I tried to order some fried whiting but they didn’t have any.  Sadly I haven’t been able to get any fried whiting since Coop’s Da Chicken Coop closed.  Maybe next week the cashier said.  Sometime in October they are suppose to have their grand opening and oxtails should be available.  They did not have fries either.

I ordered fried catfish with candied yams.  Yam had a bit of sweetness and a light cinnamon flavor.  Catfish filets were big and thick.

I was impressed by how juicy they were as usually I get little pieces that have dry parts where the fish is very thin.  Cornmeal batter was crunchy and had a nice salty flavor.  I loved the fried catfish here.

2nd visit I tried the small plates.  They are $10 and you get 1 side.  You get 1 big piece of catfish.  Catfish had a crunchy corn meal batter and tender juicy catfish.  Delicious.

I also got 2 chicken wings.  Wings featured crispy skin with seasoning. I liked the flavor and the chicken was tender and moist.

Staff was nice and answered all my questions.  This is a nice spot to eat.  There is lots of free parking in the structure.

I remember visiting Parkway Plaza many years ago when the kids were young enough to play on the coin operated machines.  Loved this place in the summer as it’s enclosed with really good AC.

Also your car didn’t get hot in the parking structure.

  1. That’s great about winning the contest for free rent. Sounds like the food is good. Geez I can’t even remember the last time I was at Parkway Plaza!

    1. It was likely when you lived in El Cajon.

  2. Parkway Plaza is definitely a blast from the past. Malls everywhere seem to be getting better food options these days. The ones that are surviving are doing business as food and social experiences since ‘regular’ shopping is more online now. And here the AC in the summer and heat in the winter is nice!

    1. I’m glad Parkway Plaza has survived. I don’t want to buy everything online. I’m keeping an eye out for when oxtail will be available.
