I remember catching smelt with my mom and brother off the Shelter Island pier. They were about the size of a large taquito and I loved when my mom pan fried them.
I was excited to see they sell fried smelt at Point Loma Seafood. An order was $10 and a nice sized snack.
These smelt were about 35% the size of the ones we caught. Smelt were crispy and I liked the mild smelt flavor.
I also ordered halibut fish and chips. Halibut was dense and had that unique halibut flavor I love. Batter added a tasty salty flavor to the halibut.
The quality of the halibut was excellent and this is one of my favorite spots to get fried halibut.
2nd visit I tried the swordfish fish and chips. Fries were crunchy and had a nice fried flavor. Swordfish was tender and moist. Light dusting of batter added a crunchy texture. Loved the light layer of seasoning which accented the delicious swordfish flavor.
Point Loma Seafood has excellent quality fish and the minimal preparation really highlights the flavor of the fish. Lots of gourmet seasoning for sale.
Employees were nice and efficient.
Cathy of mmm-yoso! has visited a bunch of times.

That’s great you enjoyed each visit! Wonderful place for fish!
Thanks! The fish is amazing here.
Awesome place for either prepared or fresh fish! Sometimes with Mitch’s nearby it’s hard to choose.
I like Mitch’s. Haven’t visited in awhile.
Grew up in Detroit; freshwater smelt is very different than ocean smelt, which I didn’t like as much (same with freshwater vs. ocean trout). In any case, everything here is just wonderful. We always get some sort of smoked fish to take home for a snack.
I love fresh water trout. I don’t think I’ve seen ocean trout. I like ocean smelt and fresh water smelt.
