When I was a kid I saw lots of movies at the local drive-in. It was fun watching movies from the car. You drove up to a pole and stuck a speaker inside the car.
I liked going to the snack bar and seeing what treats were available. The scent of fresh popcorn wafted from the snack bar.
Things are a little different now. You tune your radio to FM station 89.3 and listen through your car speakers. The sound is now excellent while before it was just ok.
The movie screen is the same.
It’s hard to see dark scenes. Before the movie started there were kids running around yelling.
Someone brought a fire pit to stay warm.
I brought my kid to experience this wonder from my childhood. It’s sad the Santee Drive-In closes on December 31 2023. It had a 65 year run. We watched Wonka. The song Pure Imagination played as we drove off into the night. Reminded me of when I was young and full of dreams.

Sad to see them close.
Yes. It’s the end of an era.
So sad to see them closing. Also, ”Before the movie started there were kids running around yelling.” I didn’t realize they also did this at outdoor movies. I thought that was a special hell reserved only for people who go to indoor movie theaters.
Maggie said they were chanting start the movie as Wonka started an hour after advertised. Lots of kids at the theatres you go to?
I’m glad I lived in a time with drive-ins and when the middle class could buy a home.
Unless it’s one of those 21+ theatres where they serve alcohol I’ve seen kids run around and/or grown adults on their phones the whole movie or talking. Just one of the many reasons I love streaming movies at home instead nowadays!
Doh! Watching at home is the most convenient way. Once in awhile it’s cool to watch on the big screen.
