Foam Insulation from Home Depot

I don’t like using the heater or the AC so I’ve been insulating the townhouse.  My last project was replacing my 2 patio doors with vinyl low-E 4 patio doors.  That did reduce the temperature spikes but it still got warmer and colder than I prefer.  My latest project has been to put one inch thick foam insulation where the heat and cold are still coming through.  I bought a 8ft x 4ft sheet from Home Depot and cut it to size with an exacto knife.  The reflective side is supposed to face the sun.

Some heat was still getting through the insulation so I taped aluminum foil to the reflective side.  The combination of the vinyl low-E windows plus aluminum foil backed foam insulation has proven to be great at keeping the sun from heating up the townhouse in the summer.

Now that it’s January the coldest month of the year in San Diego.   I’m putting up the foam insulation at night where the cold gets in.  The front door is the coldest spot.

The single pane glass near the top of the door is freezing at night while the wood not as cold.

I put a piece of the foam insulation between my security door and the front door.  The glass is no longer freezing and the wood doesn’t feel cold anymore.

low-E 4 specs

The low-E 4 patio doors I purchased turned out to be very good at keeping the cold out while the low-E 3 windows are not as good.

That’s not a problem as the foam insulation placed in the window sill does an excellent job at keeping the cold out.

When I was a kid I remember freezing every winter in old apartments with single pane windows.  We were poor so we kept the heater on low.  The freezing cold would come through the window and make the living space freezing.  Window technology has come a long way since then.

The addition of foam insulation has made my living space almost comfortable even on the coldest nights.

  1. Nice description and pictures of your project!

  2. Very cool to have a year-round return on your investment – cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. And less money toward the thieves at SDG&E who make billions with their monopoly.

    1. Thanks! I read stories of how seniors can’t afford to pay the utility bill and freeze to death or die from the heat. I don’t want to end up like that.
